Just a one-minute walk from Nasu Utopia Minosawa Art Village, we found beautiful fireflies dancing along the rice field paths again this year. The gentle glow of the fireflies in the night brings deep emotion and healing to all visitors.
About Firefly Species and Habitats
There are about 40 species of fireflies in Japan, but the ones known for viewing are particularly the “Genji Firefly” and the “Heike Firefly.”
1. Genji Firefly (Scientific Name: Luciola cruciata)
- Characteristics: With a body length of about 15-20mm, it is a representative firefly of Japan. The males emit a strong light while flying.
- Habitat: Mainly found in mountain areas with clear streams, along water edges and rice field paths. The larvae grow by eating aquatic snails (a type of shellfish).
- Lighting Period: Peak from late May to early July.
2. Heike Firefly (Scientific Name: Luciola lateralis)
- Characteristics: Smaller than the Genji Firefly, with a body length of about 10-15mm. The light is weaker and they are often seen in grasslands and wetlands. They have a gentle flying style.
- Habitat: Commonly found in shallow water edges of rice fields, wetlands, and around ponds, mostly in relatively flat areas. The larvae also prey on small aquatic animals.
- Lighting Period: From mid-June to late July.
Firefly Situation Around Our Hotel
The Minosawa area of Nasu Town is rich in natural environments, and the presence of Genji Fireflies has been confirmed especially in areas with clear streams and rice fields. The well-maintained paths and water edges provide an excellent habitat for these fireflies to live and breed.
At our facility, surrounded by a rich natural environment, you can enjoy the changing seasons along with art appreciation and sauna experiences. Firefly viewing is a limited-time natural gift that can be enjoyed from mid-June to early July each year. Please enjoy a night stroll as well.
